BE DOERS OF THE WORD, NOT JUST HEARERS

BE DOERS OF THE WORD, NOT JUST HEARERS
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."— James 1:22

It is possible to hear the Word of God again and again, understand what it says, agree with it, and even be deeply moved by a sermon, yet never allow that Word to change the way we live.

James gives us a very clear challenge: we must not stop at hearing the Word. We must put it into practice.

That is where obedience comes in.

HEARING IS NOT THE END

Every time we open the Bible, listen to a sermon, attend a Bible study, participate in a missions training, or receive godly instruction, we are being given an opportunity to respond.

But hearing alone does not bring transformation.

We may know that we are supposed to forgive, yet continue holding on to an offence.

We may know that Jesus commanded us to make disciples, yet never intentionally disciple anyone.

We may hear about caring for the poor and vulnerable, yet remain unconcerned about the needs around us.

We may learn about people who have little or no access to the Gospel, pray for them from time to time, and still never take a practical step toward reaching them.

The Word begins to transform us when what we 'hear' starts becoming what we 'do'.

A PICTURE OF OBEDIENCE

Think about two boots.

One is clean, polished, and looks impressive. It has never really been used.

The other is covered with mud. It has been on the road. It has walked through difficult places. It has served its purpose.

Which one tells the better story?

The muddy boot does.

Why? Because it has been used.

In many ways, this is a picture of our Christian walk.

God is not simply looking for believers who know Scripture, speak Christian language, or appear spiritually impressive. He desires people who are willing to "walk in obedience to His Word".

And obedience is not always comfortable.

Sometimes it means making a sacrifice. Sometimes it means serving when we would rather rest, giving when it would be easier to keep, forgiving when we feel justified in holding a grudge, going when we would rather stay, or stepping outside our comfort zone because God has given us an assignment.

Faith becomes visible when we obey.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A DOER?

Being a doer of the Word means allowing God's Word to shape our 'decisions, relationships, priorities, resources, and daily actions'.

It means we stop asking only, '“What does the Bible say?”' and begin asking, “How should I respond to what the Bible says?”

We can ask ourselves:

• What is God asking me to do?
• Who is He asking me to serve?
• Who needs to hear the Gospel through me?
• What instruction from Scripture have I been postponing?
• What step of obedience can I take today?

A hearer may say, “That was a powerful message.”

A doer asks, “What am I going to do about it?”

That difference matters.

FROM HEARING TO MISSIONS

At Reaching the Unreached Int'l (RUI), we believe that the Great Commission calls us beyond awareness into action.

Jesus said:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations...” — Matthew 28:19

There are still people, communities, and people groups with limited access to the Gospel. Reaching them will require believers who are willing to move beyond hearing about missions and become participants in God's mission.

Not everyone will serve in the same way.

• Some are called to go.

• Some are called to pray.

• Some are called to give.

• Some are called to train and equip others.

• Some are called to mobilize the Church.

• Others are called to serve communities through practical expressions of God's love while making Christ known.

The assignments may be different, but the response is the same:

Obedience.

DON'T JUST ADMIRE THE WORD—APPLY IT

The purpose of Bible study is not simply to increase our knowledge or give us more Scriptures to quote. God's Word is meant to transform the way we live.

When Scripture teaches us to love, we love.

When it tells us to forgive, we forgive.

When it calls us to serve, we serve.

When it teaches us to give, we give.

When Christ tells us to go, we go.

When He commands us to make disciples, we make disciples.

When we see someone in need, we respond.

Sometimes we keep waiting for the perfect opportunity, the perfect time, or enough resources before we act. But obedience often begins with simply responding to the opportunity God has already placed in front of us.

Obedience is faith in motion.

A CHALLENGE FOR EVERY BELIEVER

Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves today is not:

“How much of the Bible have I heard?”

but:

“How much of what I have heard am I actually doing?”

You may have listened to hundreds of sermons.

You may have attended countless Bible studies and Christian conferences.

You may have participated in missions trainings.

You may know many Scriptures by heart.

But what has all that knowledge produced in your life?

The world does not only need Christians who can "quote the Word". It needs Christians who will "live the Word".

Our communities need believers whose faith can be seen in the way they live.

The unreached need believers who will take the Great Commission seriously.

The next generation needs disciples who will show them what it truly means to follow Christ.

Our knowledge of the Word should eventually become visible in our lives.

YOUR NEXT STEP

You do not have to change the whole world today.

Start with one act of obedience.

√ Pray for someone.

√ Share the Gospel with someone.

√ Encourage someone.

√ Forgive someone.

√ Serve someone.

√ Give toward God's work.

√ Disciple someone.

√ Respond to a missions opportunity.

√ Take the next step God has placed before you.

Sometimes we make obedience seem complicated when God is simply asking us to take the next step.

You may not know everything that lies ahead. You may not feel completely ready. But you can still obey what God has already made clear.

BE MORE THAN A HEARER

Remember the two boots.

The polished boot may look impressive, but the muddy boot tells a story.

It tells us that someone walked.

Someone served.

Someone went.

Someone was willing to get their feet dirty.

Someone obeyed.

May our lives tell that kind of story.

Let people see our faith not only in what we say, but also in what we do.

Let us not be Christians who only hear about God's work. "Let us participate in it."

Let us not merely know the Word. "Let us live the Word.

Let us not remain hearers when God is calling us to become doers.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” — James 1:22

A FINAL QUESTION

'What is one thing God has been asking you to do that you have only been hearing about?'

Maybe you have been postponing it.

Maybe you have been waiting until you feel more prepared.

Maybe you have been waiting for someone else to take the first step.

Perhaps today is the day to respond.

√ Take that step.

√ Obey the Word.

√ Put your faith into action.

√ Be a doer, not just a hearer.
